In the morning, commencing our day with a short drive to the Jobra dam site, we walk through a mesmerizing and pleasant landscapes taking us through a mixed forest consisting of pines, spruce, deodar, chestnut and maple trees leading to a beautiful meadow crossing where we’ll eventually set up camp. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot a Gaddi Shepherd led herds or two. We will then cross the river at a vantage point if the gaddis haven’t made a makeshift bridge somewhere along the river leading us to the beautiful Chikha meadow along a side stream. Today will be a gentle 2 hour hike ending in a nearby waterfall side which also plays host to a number of white capped redstarts.
The night will be spent under the starry skies. While waiting for the stars to crowd the sky, engage yourself in conversations with your fellow travellers and enjoy the first meal at our beautiful campsite. Post that, sleep well for you have a lot to look forward to.
Be prepared because this day hike will be an interesting one. Crossing the stream immediately after the campsite, we start gaining height and moving along the river. Here you’ll get to experience the beautiful meadows enriched with wildflowers which will eventually lead us to the our campsite for the day, Balu-ka-Gheera. This will take about 3.5 to 4 hrs with a couple of breaks in between. This campsite is along a network of river channels and has big mountains guarding it on all sides.
Be ready to wake up at sunrise since this will be an early morning departure for between 5-6:00 a.m. depending on the weather. Be prepared to be mesmerised with snow filled pathways after leaving the camp. A 4-5hr climb will begin starting with a steep climb on scree slopes, covering a couple of ridges which will eventually lead us to the pass.Breath- taking views of Indrasan and Deotibba peaks completely dominate the landscape with the ranges towards Lahaul looking absolutely majestic. Here, we’ll spend some time capturing the scenery and rejuvenationand eventually begin our 2-3 hr climb down to the Shea Gahru campsite, which is set beautifully between the mountains.
Starting our day at 5am, we will hike downhill and experience the contrasting landscape of Lahaul & Spiti regions. Expect some tricky terrain involving a traverse and some river crossings. Finishing at Chatru and from here board the waiting vehicles to take us to Chandratal. Reaching in about 2-2.5 hrs, enjoy lazing around the lake and taking in the surreal landscape, an absolutely delight to all senses.
